What is Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)?
EFAW is the standard one-day UK workplace first aid qualification for lower-risk environments. Learn who needs it, how long it lasts, and how to book.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the standard one-day UK workplace first aid qualification for lower-risk environments, typically lasting about six hours, with a certificate valid for three years.
What does EFAW cover?
EFAW trains nominated workplace first aiders to manage common emergencies until further help arrives. Content usually includes assessing an incident, CPR, choking, bleeding, shock, burns, seizures and other day-one workplace scenarios.
Exact syllabuses vary by awarding body and provider, but the outcome is the same: a competent emergency first aider for workplaces whose first aid needs assessment points to EFAW rather than the fuller First Aid at Work course.
Who needs Emergency First Aid at Work?
Employers in the UK must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people. Many lower-risk offices, shops and similar workplaces nominate EFAW-trained first aiders after completing a needs assessment.
EFAW is a poor fit when your assessment points to higher risk, remote work, children, or outdoor leadership — those roles usually need FAW, paediatric, outdoor or Forest School courses instead.
